How to
Make Plants Grow

A farmer o~entimes saves seed from his fall harvest. Comes spring
he takes the seed he has saved and plows it into his farmland. Thus, by
saving some of what he has produced today, the farmer is able to
grow another crop tomorrow and keep his farm business going.
Business works in a similar fashion. For example, American Oil is
modernizing its Texas City plant this year. We are able to build three
of the largest, most modern process units in the world, because we
were able to save some of our "seed." In our case, the "seed" happens
to be the profit we've earned by selling the Amoco products we have
produced. Businessmen call this "plowing back profits."
(Incidentally, we first pay for raw materials, good wages, taxes, and
other costs of doing business. After these costs are met, only then may
we find ourselves with "profit-seeds.")
By plowing back these profits into our plant, we are preserving future
jobs. The plant will continue to employ men at good wages who, because of the new equipment, will be able to produce products at
reasonable prices. Products produced at reasonable prices may be sold ,
for a profit.
This is the American Free Enterprise system at work.
Trouble develops in this system if costs such as taxes, or materials, or
labor, eat up all ~he "seed." If there is no "seed" for the owners of
the business (that is, the stockholders} to plow back into the business,
the plant eventually will die. Therefore, it is vital for all groups concerned-whether they be governments, employees, or stockholdersthat the plant earn a profit.
