Texas City - 14
vs

Pasadena - 18
Opening their 1968 season, the Stings lost a close battle to the
Pasadena Eagles, 18-14. The Stings took the first quarter lead after
a drive from the one by Staggs to bring the score to 7-0. In the
second period, Pasadena bounced back scoring 6 points. However,
the extra point was missed as the Stings went into the locker room
with a 7-6 lead. In the third quarter the Eagles managed a 12-7
lead, but the Stings retaliated with a touchdown pass to Charles
Stiernberg. A 72 yard drive by an alert Eagle gave Pasadena the
lead. The Stings last effort
resulted in frustration as
Staggs' pass to Scoggins
was swiped at the four yard
line.

Sam Houston - 29
The highly rated Sam Houston Tigers secured a victory by
capitalizing on Sting mistakes for a final score of 29-7. Texas
City's lone touchdown came late in the last half of play. With
quarterback James Varley leading the Stings, the team marched
65 yards, Varley himself scoring from the one. John Schluens
kicked the extra point, his third consecutive one without a miss.

In a disappointing game, Texas City bowed to the
Baytown Ganders with a final score of 27-6. Although
the Stings posted a good defensive effort in the first
quarter, the Ganders gained four touchdowns in the
following three quarters. Avoiding the shut.out, Ramie
Ramirez hauled in two passes resulting in 43 yards and

Texas City - 6
vs

La Marque - 23
Playing an evenly matched first half, the Stingarees fell to the La Marque Tigers with a final score of 23-6. Staggs,
Ramirez, and Applegath marched off the yards to set up the score from the one by Staggs himself in the second
quarter. A bad snap prevented the Stings from kicking the extra point and minutes later, the Tigers took a 7-6 lead. In
the third quarter, resulting from a bad snap, the Tigers were granted a safety. And late in the same period, La Marque
secured their lead further with another touchdown. After another Tiger score in the fourth quarter, the Stings threatened to get back in the game with a touchdown, only to have it called back due to a penalty. Unable to score, the Stings
gave up the ball to the Tigers as the clock ran out.

Battling increasing odds, the Texas City

a score of 34-7. The Stings tied the score
in the first quarter, only to have two more
touchdowns scored by the spirited Tors.
With the score 34-7 in the third quarter,
the Stings' resistance began to fail and
the Tors emerged victorious to preserve
their perfect record.

Texas City - 7
vs

Brazosport - 38
Turning costly Stingaree mistakes into scores, the
Exporters downed Texas City 38-7 in a game
between old rivals. With their offensive team dominating the game, Brazosport scored two touchdowns ·in the first quarter of play. Scoring two
more touchdowns and a field goal in the following
periods, the Exporters threatened to shut out the
Stingarees. But with 53 seconds to go in tbe
game, the fighting Stings scored as a result of
Varley's pass to Stiernberg for a 52 yard drive.
John Schluens kicked the extra point.

207

Texas City - 20 vs Lamar Consolidated - 12
A moving offense sparked
the Stingarees to their first
win of the season downing the
Lamar Consolidated Mustangs.
Travis Scoggins halted the
Mustang drive in the first
quarter when he intercepted a
pass on the five yard line. In
the second period, runs by
Stiernberg, McAninch, and
Standley set the ball on the
two yard line where McAninch took it over. Minutes
later, Staggs scored another 6
points by running 70 yards.
McAninch managed a 2-point
conversion by flipping a pass
to Doyle Fletcher. In the third
quarter, the Stings recovered
a Mustang fumble at the 25.
Piling into the line four consecutive times, Staggs scored
again. The Stings held the
lead until the final play was
completed.

Posting a "second-half" effort, the fighting

Trailing 14-0 at the half, the Stings recovered
well. Grabbing a Cat fumble, Wyatt set up the
drive enabling Staggs to score. In the same
quarter, after Staggs connected passes to Stiernberg, Ramirez, and Fletcher, another 6 points
appeared on the board for the Stings. A pitch
from Staggs to McAninch secured the 2 extra
points to tie the score 14-14. Minutes later the
winning TD began. As a result of a fumble

MARATHON OIL COMPANY
TEXAS CITY, TEXAS

Dear 1969 Graduate
Within Marathon we promote growth.

Our success depends on growth in

all phases of our operations: production, refining, marketing, transportation and research.

These physical achievements become possible through the

growth of our employees' abilities and their sense of responsibility, both
on their job and in their communities.
Your "promotion" from high school is one of the first significant
steps in your growth.

We wish you success and encourage you to continue to

develop your talents and skills.
Sincerely yours,

Dead last at the drag strip.
It would be, too. If its owner were crazy enough
to race it. But he knows this 1932 Pierce Arrow
V-12 was made to strut, not speed. The owner knows to
keep this classic auto in mint condition. And
he lets us help him do just that.
But that figures. After all, keeping carshis or yours-running well is our business .
